emily theresa wierenga

“I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting Emily Wierenga at my annual writers’ workshop in Italy. Emily competed to participate in the Lake Como workshop by submitting an excerpt from Mum’s Dance, and her beautiful prose made her an immediate winner. Mum’s Dance is a powerful story, beautifully told, and rich with inspiration. Emily Wierenga is a writer to watch.” (Elle Newmark, Simon & Schuster)
about e
i am a journalist, author and artist. my first book, Save My Children, was published by Castle Quay Books in September of 2008. i am represented by Sandra Bishop of MacGregor Literary.a former associate editor, ghostwriter and staff writer, i now freelance for Christian Week, Faith Today, Kyria, Adbusters, Geez, Focus on the Family, In Touch Magazine, and others. i also write a monthly column for the Christian Courier, in addition to serving as copy-editor.
when i'm not writing, i play guitar, and i paint. oil, acrylic, gouache. i paint the abstract in bright colors, and i do commissions for clients from around the globe. prints and originals are available at my art website.
i blog, hosting an online community of artists every thursday. i also serve as arts feature editor for every day poems, and am a monthly contributor to a deeper story.
my
husband, Trenton, is a math and science teacher. we've been married eight years, have two boys named Aiden Grey and Kasher Jude, and live in a small town in rural Alberta. we work with youth, drive a veggie-oil car, and make wine.
i come from a home-schooling heritage; my mum now battles brain cancer. her tumor is shrinking. she is my song. my dad is her hero. he cares for her daily; pastors a church. i am the eldest of four.
i love to travel. as a child, i lived in Africa, my parents being missionaries. i've been to the Dominican Republic, Australia, Korea--where Trent and i taught English for a year--Lebanon, Jordan, Japan, China, Mexico, Holland, England and Germany. in June of 2009, an excerpt of my writing sent me to an exclusive fiction workshop in Lake Como, Italy.
mine is a broken story, fractured by anorexia nervosa, mended by grace. as navigator with the National Eating Disorders Association and facilitator through FINDINGbalance, i now live to help families find healing on the eating disorder journey.
thank you, for standing with me in this literary and artistic chaos.
live in love.
