Sept. 21This past week was spent in Winnipeg researching Renee's life. Renee Dueck is the girl I will be writing about for my next book. I have decided to invest myself full-time into this project, and have it finished by April of 2009.
Aug. 30
Recently I accepted a position as ghostwriter for a book about a girl who recently passed away from Leukemia. This will consume my time over the next year or so, but I will also continue doing assignments for specific publications.
Aug. 17
I've been working, while on the road, on articles for Vision Ministries Canada, Christian Week and FaithLife Financial. I'm also going to be writing a book for a family whose daughter recently passed away from Leukemia, so that is my next big challenge. For the next two weeks, however, I'm going on vacation to Virginia with my family (but will be proofreading the final stages of Save My Children which is currently being published).
Aug. 2
Despite being 'on holiday' in Alberta, I've been working away on pieces for Christian Week and Faith Today. I did a feature on a new AIDS initiative in BC; did a profile on the band, Garner, and interviewed Steve Bell for a CFGB piece. I am currently working on an Ecuhomes feature, as well as a story on WindRider Forum, a new Christian discussion group on movies at Wycliffe. Finally, I'm doing pieces for FaithLife Financial's newsletter, the latest of which addressed donations being made to Myanmar.
July 15
This week I interviewed Phil Callaway and Drew Marshall for a piece entitled 'Healing for the Holidays' for Focus on the Family. I also did a profile on Dr. Christine O'Reilly for Faith Today, and interviewed Faytene Krsyskow of The Cry Canada for Christian Week. Finally, I did a piece on an inspiring hairdresser from Saskatoon for Living Light News.
July 1
In addition to doing features on biofuels and media for The Record, as well as a news story on Rural Poverty and another on an Aids Initiative in BC, I was recently honoured to write about my late friend and husband's co-worker Julian Dabbagh for Christian Week. Julian died in a car accident on June 14 and left behind his pregnant wife Kathy and two young children.
June 18
This month I've been writing up stories for The Presbyterian Record revolving around General Assembly; this includes a profile of the new moderator, a news story on the Truth and Reconciliation tour, profiles of other special guests and newsbriefs on various motions which were passed. I also have a piece on music being published in the next issue of Geez, and my column on farming is currently running in Christian Week.
May 25
This week I'll be traveling to Montreal to cover the Heart, Mind and Soul conference for the Presbyterian Record. Then I'll be reporting for six days on the Presbyterian General Assembly in Ottawa. Additionally I am interviewing Angie Hains, director of Ecuhome Corp. in Toronto, and David Cameron, a scholar and university professor who's working on the new design for the city of Jerusalem.
May 16
I am busy working on news stories about Chinese churches and what they're doing to help back home in light of the earthquake; I interviewed Reynold and Kathy Mainse for a Faith Today story on Heaven's Rehearsal; did a profile on Ernie Regehr, founder of Project Ploughshares for Christian Week Ontario, as well as a news piece on the Parkhill Dam Tragedy, and finally a profile on D.C. Kettle, the new Chaplain General for Canada.
May 12
Today I interviewed Drew Marshall, host of The Drew Marshall Show. His supposedly controversial views of Churchianity were so refreshing. Tomorrow I will be speaking with some Karen refugees from Burma living in Thunder Bay, Ont.
May 1
This was my final week as a 'freelance writer' for 2008; I am now officially staff reporter for The Presbyterian Record. Tomorrow I'll be attending the Canadian Church Press conference in Cambridge, and next week following my interview on 100 Huntley St. I'll be partaking in my first official Record meeting in Toronto. I have completed all of my big features, so I am feeling rested and prepared. I will miss freelancing, but am grateful for the opportunities it's opened up and am looking forward to returning to it by next summer. In the meantime, I do have a column which will be coming out in Christian Week starting June 1, and will continue to work for Reimer-Reason.
April 25
This week has blown by. I've been working on two pieces for Living Light News, two profiles for Christian Week, two pieces for Reimer-Reason, a feature on biofuels for The Presbyterian Record, another feature on Children and Worship for The Record, and two features on Short Term Mission Trips for Beacon magazine.
April 17
What a week. Just returned from covering a CFGB workshop on biofuels for The Record; yesterday I interviewed Daniel Kiroket, a CFGB exchange intern from Kenya for Faith Today; also completed a feature on Melissa Bothwell, artistic director at FreeStyle Arts Studio in Peterborough for Women Alive. Additionally I completed a profile on Shauna Simmonds for Christian Week, and am waiting to hear back from Hanneke Cost Budde, a missionary in Tanzania, for another CW profile. I finished the feature on Making Cents of Faith for Focus on the Family, but have still got to tackle a piece on the CFGB Food Study Tour for Faith Today, a profile for Reimer Reason, and a news story for Living Light News.
On Wednesday I attended a Presbyterian Record meeting; they gave me a copier/scanner/faxer/printer to make up for the one which was fried by lightening. I'm so thankful.
This past week I've been working on the Ray Barnett piece (for BC Christian News) and a profile of a local man for Reimer Reason. Yesterday I received two profile assignments from Christian Week, one on Shauna Simmons of Make You Think TV, and one on Hanneke Cost Budde, a missionary in Tanzania.
I'm also about to tackle a piece on family and finances for Focus on the Family.
April 3
When we pray, He listens! This week I've received exciting assignments.
Firstly I interviewed Pastor Peikang Dai, a dynamic humble Chinese immigrant whose heart burns for his people. That profile will be going in Christian Week.
I was then asked by the Presbyterian Record to do a feature on Scott Mission Camp, Toronto's inner city Christian camp. This year marks their 50th anniversary.
This weekend I will be covering The Dunamis Project for the Record -- a Holy Spirit initiative by Dr. Brad Long.
BC Christian News has asked me to do a profile on the visionary behind the African Children's CHoir, Mr. Ray Barnett. I will be speaking to him next Tuesday.
And finally, Beacon magazine has asked me to do two features based on mission trips.
It's wonderful what the Lord is doing! I could never be satisfied writing for mainstream publications :)
March 28
This week I interviewed the founder of Bus Stop Bible Studies for Faith Today; I also completed a piece for Christian Week on the Excalibur Conference happening in Hamilton, which involved interviewing Phil Cann of Youth Unlimited. And I completed my first piece for Sandra, which involved interviewing the VP of Canada's Association for Suicide Prevention.
Additionally I've been working on finding agents for my books and writing 'Teatime with Mum' which is proving quite challenging yet therapeutic.
March 18
I've been working on the art of prayer and patience: it's really neat to see how assignments show up in my inbox when I pray... And wait. :) I'm working on a last-minute piece for Living Light News, highlighting the unique ministry of photographer Christine Mariner (www.uncontainedphotography.com). I'm also doing a piece on debt in Canada for Christian Week, as well as a profile on the CFGB's Youth Food Study Tour to Honduras. Interesting stuff!
I also received a phone call today from Sandra Reimer of Reimer-Reason, and will be working with her to promote various non-profit organizations across the country. This requires writing a few articles each month.
March 14
This week I completed the abortion feature for CW; I also interviewed Steve Olson, a businessman who works with recycled rubber in Saskatoon, whose story of resolve and perseverence humbled me (this will be going in Living Light News), and today I interviewed Shauna Simmonds, executive founder of Make You Think TV, for a cover story for Options Magazine (a branch off of BC Christian News).
March 6
Currently I'm working on my first feature assignment from Christian Week, discussing the abortion debate 20 years after the Morgetnaler decision. Also, I'm glad to announce that Ken Epp's bill proceeded on to the Committee Stage yesterday!
March 4
Yesterday I spoke with Inuit pastor and leader James Arreak, for a Faith Today profile. What a passionate man. I had not realized how 'ignored' the Inuit felt; they've been treated quite injustly by the government, which according to Arreak treats foreigners better than it does its own people.
Feb. 29
Today I completed a piece for CW on two Rwandan sisters who have founded an organization to help the thousands of homeless children in Rwandna; this organization is called "Shelter Them."
I also interviewed Stu Grimson, formerly the 'Grim Reaper' of the NHL, for the Canadian Sports Magazine, and have been asked by Faith Today to interview James Arreak, Inuit Leader from Nunavet.
Finally, I am working on a piece for CW on Ken Epp's Bill C-484: The Unborn Victims of Violence Act.
Feb. 26
I've been completing assignments for Christian Week and The Presbyterian Record. I did a feature on seniors for CW Ont; that was fascinating. I also finished up a piece on Siege Montreal for the national edition of CW, highlighting Faytene Kryskow, and am working on another on Shelter Them ministries (an organization started by Toronto-based sisters who grew up Rwanda and are now helping homeless kids in Rwanda).
Next I hope to cover Ken Epp's latest bill which will protect unborn victims from crime acts (the government is voting on it March 7th; see here for details: www.4mycanada.ca.
I'll also be interviewing former NHL star Stu Grimson for the Canadian Sports Magazine.
Feb. 15
I have the job! As of May 5, I will be staff reporter for The Presbyterian Record. It's a contract position for either 6 months or a full year, depending on the person I'm taking over for; she going on mat-leave. I'm grateful for this new opportunity.
Currently I'm working on two stories for Christian Week Ontario; one is featuring Paul Robertson (www.paulrobertson.ca) and Today's Teen Conference and the other is interviewing the author of 'Worship Walk.'
Feb. 12
I'm working on two pieces for New Horizons, a university-newspaper produced annually by Living Light News. I've also been asked to work full-time for The Presbyterian Record as staff-writer; I will be meeting with them in Toronto on Thursday.
This week I had an editor call me and guide me through an article, teaching me how to better word it; I'm so thankful to editors such as her, who care enough to help me become a more equipped writer.
Feb. 8
My manuscript entitled "A Weighty Fear" which details my battle with Anorexia has been picked up by In Touch magazine in the States. Praise God!
Feb. 4
I've been asked to do a feature on Camping across Canada for Focus on the Family, for their May issue.
Feb. 1
This past week I interviewed Don Reynolds, NHLPA agent and founder of Uptwon Sports Management. That will be a Q&A piece appearing in the May issue of Beacon magazine.
I also completed 'The Skinny on Eating Disorders,' a feature for Focus on the Family.
I wrote a piece for Christian Week on Kenya, interviewing various subjects on how media has skewed the truth about Kenya's chaos; I also wrote on Christian camping and how it's changed over the past decade, and I compiled a piece on The Word Guild for Christian Week Ontario. Additionally, I completed five columns which will be running from June - August in the national edition of Christian Week on Farming.
I interviewed Dr. Richard Allen, a Presbyterian missionary in Kenya, on the situation there for a piece in The Presbyterian Record.
Presently I'm working on two more pieces for Christian Week; one nis on the new Copyright Reform the CCC is hoping to have passed; the other is on a ministry a Saskatoon lady is running out of an industrial part of town.Jan. 18
God is good.
Crossroads Television Station asked me to come in and be interviewed for a position with their 'Compass' magazine; upon learning of my testimony, they asked if they could feature me on 100 Huntley Street!
I will be appearing on '100 Huntley Street' on May 6th, at 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. EST. May God use it for his glory. I only wish I had my book (Canvas Child, a fictionalized version of my testimony) ready to take with me for the telecast. Oh well, all in God's timing. I will make mention of it. I am still waiting to hear back from the particular agent who's looking at both of my manuscripts.
I have received another assignment from Focus on the Family; this one will be appearing in the June edition of the mag, and will be dealing with eating disorders.
Additionally I wrote an article on the Word Guild's new amalgamation, and am seeking an interview with one of Mission Fest's speakers for a Faith Today feature.
Finally I just completed two pieces for Christian Week, one on Kenya's current situation as viewed through the eyes of a World Relief worker.
I enjoy my job. I am so privileged to be able to inscribe people's stories into the sands of time, shifting as they are. Thank you Jesus.
Jan. 10
Yesterday I visited Crossroads Television Station in order to interview Richard Landau of Faith Journal and Behind the Story. It was a very interesting day, although I was exhausted by the end of it. In my truck on the way home I recorded some of my Canvas Child story on my MP3; I'm finding that works well.
FOTF has given me a new assignment for March on Eating Disorders; I'm excited to tackle that.
I have been asked to go into Crossroads for an interview next Thursday regarding freelancing for their magazine, Compass.
I am spending today working on Canvas Child and attacking a few new assignments for Living Light News and Christian Week... While it's been an exciting week, I'm looking forward to the lull of the weekend. :)
Jan. 3
It's snowing both outside and in! I returned from my holidays to a pile of assignments, which is wonderful.
Initially, I am working on a feature for Focus on the Family Canada, related to TV violence and its effect on children.
I also have three articles which just ran in the current Christian Week issue, and three which will be featured in BC Christian News!
Dec. 29
I've been asked by Beacon Magazine to write up a Q&A with Don Reynolds of Uptown Sports Management. Should be neat. I just finished a large feature on Circuit Rider Preachers for Beacon, which was fascinating.
Dec. 23, 2007
From 2003-2006 I was editor for Living Light News (www.livinglightnews.org). This job included writing front page features, centrespreads, music and book reviews, Lifestyle and Sights and Sounds features, and sports profiles.
Since then I've been freelance writing for various publications across Canada (in addition to teaching English for one year in Korea with my husband). These publications include Christian Week, Faith Today, Geez, Adbusters, BC Christian News, Living Light News, The Presbyterian Record and Beacon magazine.
Here I will be including some of the articles which I'm working on.
-----------
Most recently I'm compiling an article for Geez based on the power of art... I'm referencing my two favorite movies: Amelie and Factory Girl, in addition to my favorite artists: Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali.
I'm also working on quite an extensive piece for The Presbyterian Record on Christian Media in Canada. This is proving very interesting, allowing me to interview various media voices across the nation including Rob Sheppard of CTS, Larry Mackey (who started up a number of Christian publications), Dr. Rev. Karen Hamilton of the CCC, and Will Braun of Geez Magazine.
