what it means to be a woman (and it's my birthday!)

She always made me carrot cake, from scratch, on my birthday.

It was the one dessert I’d let myself eat because it tasted like love.

Mum would stand in the kitchen, August wind blowing through gingham curtains, her apron on, mixing, and she always looked a little sad, except when she was in her garden.

I wanted to be one of her flowers.

Don’t make me cake, I thought. Just hold me a little, but her flowers were so beautiful and I was an awkward kid with bowl-cut hair and large-rimmed glasses. With me as the freak and Mum being so insecure, she and I were like two sad little puppets on fear’s string, dancing awkwardly side by side until the day her string got cut.

(Won't you join me over at She Loves, today, friends, for the rest of this piece? Thank you... And I'm so grateful to spend today, my 32nd birthday, with you, dear friends. You've made this past year so bright. Love, e.)

  1. Carrot cake does taste like love. It's what the Swede and I chose for our wedding cake--on August 4th. And now it will always make me think of you.

Happy birthday, dear friend! Heading over...

  3. We don't always ask for what we need, we women. Tender story. Raw and lovely. I'm glad your mom is well and asking for the touch she deserves. As do you. Happy Birthday. :)

  7. Happy Happy birthday dear Emma, and so many more of them I hope.. 32 is such an age, almost grown up, but still youthful and full of life and adventure.. When I was 32 I was expecting my fourth child and coughed for the first 3 months, but my grandmother told me it would be a boy and she was so right... she had coughed for three months with one of her 11 children.. I hope that all you wish for comes true and life treats you well.. you are so worth it!!
